Is Driscolls Organic? Only Some of Their Berries Are
Driscolls sells two separate lines of berries, and only one of them is organic. The organic packs carry the USDA Organic seal and the word Organic on the front of the container, and that fruit comes from independent growers certified under the National Organic Program. Everything else in the range is conventional fruit, grown with integrated pest management instead of organic rules, and conventional packs make up the larger share of what reaches the shelf. Partly organic is the honest answer. Check the seal on the clamshell in your hand, because the brand name on its own tells you nothing about how that particular batch was grown.
Is Driscolls Organic Across Its Whole Berry Range
No, and the company has never said it was. Driscoll’s runs a certified organic program and a conventional program side by side, and the conventional side is much bigger. Food Blog Alliance, which looked specifically at the strawberry line, states the plain version of this: most Driscoll’s strawberries are not organic, and the certified organic fruit is a separate, smaller line inside the range.
Scale is what makes the question confusing. Wikipedia’s entry on the business, which tracks the company’s market position, puts its share of the United States organic strawberry market at roughly 60%. Truthout, in an article critical of how organic certification is applied to hydroponics, gives a figure of about 64% for the US organic berry market as a whole. Both numbers describe how much of the organic category one company supplies. Neither says anything about the split between organic and conventional inside Driscoll’s own harvest.
Marketing language adds to the muddle. On its organics page the company calls itself “the leader in fresh berries, growing the finest organic berries in the world,” a sentence that describes the organic program rather than the whole business. Read quickly, it sounds like a claim about everything the brand sells. In practice it is a claim about one line within the business.
What the Package Tells You
Organic berries have to be labelled. Under the rules the company follows, an organic pack shows the word Organic on the front and carries the round USDA Organic seal, and Food Blog Alliance points shoppers to exactly those two marks as the way to identify the certified line. A pack without them is conventional fruit, whatever else the design suggests.
Conventional containers look close to identical otherwise. Same logo, same clamshell shape, same fruit inside as far as the eye can tell. Shelf position does not settle it either, since stores often stock the two versions together in the berry case. Only the seal is decisive.
Which Berries Come in an Organic Version
All four of the core berries have an organic version. The California Certified Organic Farmers directory listing for Driscoll’s, Inc. records organic blackberries, blueberries, raspberries and strawberries under the company’s certification, so no part of the lineup is conventional only at the company level.
Availability in a given store is a different matter. A certification covering four berry types means the organic fruit exists somewhere in the supply chain, not that your local produce aisle carries organic raspberries this week. Seasons, shipping distance and how much organic fruit a retailer chooses to order all change what you actually see, and the company does not publish store level stock lists.
One further line sits on top of the organic one. Driscoll’s announced a pilot with Fair Trade USA to bring Fair Trade Certified organic strawberries and raspberries to market, which means a small amount of fruit carries both an organic claim and a labor standard claim. Fair Trade and organic are separate certifications with separate auditors, so a Fair Trade mark on its own is not evidence that the berries are organic.
What USDA Organic Certification Means for These Berries
USDA Organic certification means Driscoll’s organic berries are “100% certified according to the USDA National Organic Program (NOP),” the federal standard that governs what can legally be sold as organic in the United States. Independent farmers who grow for the company hold their own certificates from USDA-accredited certifying agencies rather than relying on a blanket company claim.
Longevity is worth noting here. The California Certified Organic Farmers directory records Driscoll’s, Inc. as certified under the National Organic Program since April 3, 1997, listed at Watsonville, California, which is more than 25 years of continuous certification as of September 2026. CCOF is the company’s primary certifying agency, and it is one of the oldest organic certifiers in the country.
The Rules Growers Have to Follow
Four requirements do most of the work. Land has to be free of prohibited chemical inputs for at least three years before the first certified harvest, which is why a conventional field cannot be switched to organic in a single season. Synthetic pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers are excluded, as is genetic engineering. Every certified operation also has to write and follow an organic system plan describing how it will meet the standard.
Genetic engineering deserves a separate note, because it is where the two Driscoll’s lines actually match. Both the organic and the conventional berries are non-GMO, according to the company’s own organics material. That is less remarkable than it sounds. No genetically engineered strawberry, raspberry, blackberry or blueberry is grown commercially at scale, so a non-GMO claim on berries is a description of the crop rather than a distinguishing feature of the brand.
Who Checks the Farms
Certifying agencies do, not the company and not the retailer. USDA accredits the agencies, the agencies certify the individual farms, and the National Organic Program sits above both as the rule setter. For most of the Driscoll’s organic supply that agency is CCOF.
What an Annual Inspection Covers
Inspectors work from the grower’s organic system plan and the compliance records kept against it. Those records are reviewed during an annual inspection, and certifiers also run random audits outside the scheduled visit, which is the part growers cannot plan around. Failing either can cost the certificate, and without a certificate the fruit cannot be sold as organic at any price.
How to Tell an Organic Pack from a Conventional One
An organic Driscoll’s pack shows the word Organic on the front along with the round USDA Organic seal, and a container lacking either mark is conventional fruit. Work through the checklist below in order in the store to confirm it.
- Front of the container: find the word Organic printed alongside the Driscoll’s name. Absence of that word is usually enough to stop there.
- USDA Organic seal: look for the round USDA Organic seal on the label. This is the mark that carries legal weight, and Food Blog Alliance treats it as the deciding test for the strawberry line.
- Certifier name: check for a certifying agency named on the pack. CCOF is the agency behind most of the company’s organic fruit, so that is the name you are most likely to find.
- Everything else: ignore phrases about sustainability, water use or pest management. Those describe practices used on conventional fruit too, and none of them mean certified organic.
Here is how that plays out with two real packs of the same berry. Take two clamshells of Driscoll’s strawberries sitting next to each other in the same case. One shows Organic on the front and the USDA seal on the label, which means the fruit came from a farm inspected against the National Organic Program that year. The other shows neither mark, which means the grower used conventional methods including integrated pest management. Price, variety and appearance may be close. Certification status is not close at all, and only the seal reports it.
If the Label Still Is Not Clear
Sometimes the pack is damaged, the label is obscured by a store sticker, or you are looking at loose fruit repacked by the retailer. Treat any pack you cannot verify as conventional. Organic is a legal claim in the United States, so unlabelled fruit is not organic fruit that simply forgot to say so.
Repacked or bulk berries are the weakest case of all, since the original certified packaging is gone and the retailer’s own signage is what remains. Ask the produce manager to show the case label the fruit arrived in if it matters to you. Failing that, buy the sealed clamshell with the seal on it and skip the loose bin.
My own buying rule would be simple: I would trust the USDA Organic seal more than the Driscoll’s name or the look of the package. The brand sells organic and conventional berries in nearly identical clamshells, so treating every Driscoll’s pack as organic would be an easy mistake. I would also look for the word Organic on the front, then leave a pack without both marks in the conventional category. That is the clearest practical distinction available to a shopper.
How Driscoll’s Grows Its Organic Berries
Driscoll’s grows its organic berries by breeding disease-resistant, non-GMO varieties, controlling pests with beneficial insects instead of synthetic sprays, and managing soil health through crop rotation, cover cropping and university-piloted disease prevention. Organic rules remove tools rather than add them, so the growing system compensates in those three areas.
Breeding and Non-GMO Plants
Plant breeding comes first. Driscoll’s develops proprietary berry varieties through selective breeding, not genetic engineering, and for the organic program it emphasises disease-resistant plants suited to the constraints organic farming imposes. A variety that resists a common fungus needs fewer interventions, which matters more when synthetic fungicides are off the table.
Pest Control Without Synthetic Sprays
An in-house entomology team handles the pest side. Researchers there study beneficial insects and predatory bugs that control pest populations without synthetic inputs, and the company promotes planting native crops around production areas to raise the number of beneficial insects nearby. Biological control of this kind works slowly and imperfectly compared with a synthetic spray, which is part of why organic yields and organic prices differ from conventional ones.
Soil and Disease Work with Universities
Soil management carries the rest of the load. Crop rotation, cover cropping and diversified plantings are used to maintain soil integrity and support biodiversity on organic ground. Driscoll’s also partners with universities to pilot organically approved disease prevention techniques, described in its own material as “cover crops, crop rotation, composts, and pre-plant soil treatments such as anaerobic soil disinfestation and steam.”
Anaerobic soil disinfestation is worth explaining, because it is the organic answer to a hard problem. Growers flood and seal the soil with a carbon source to starve it of oxygen, which kills soil-borne pathogens without a chemical fumigant. Steam treatment does something similar with heat. Neither is as quick or as cheap as fumigation, and both are the kind of substitute organic certification forces a grower to find.
Conventional fields get a different toolkit. There the company uses integrated pest management, water conservation and soil health programs, which reduce chemical use without eliminating it. Useful as those programs are, they do not meet the organic standard, and Food Blog Alliance is direct about the gap between them.
The Certifications Driscoll’s Holds Beyond USDA Organic
Driscoll’s holds international organic certifications beyond USDA Organic, including EU and UK equivalence since 2005, US/Canada equivalence since 2009, Mexico compliance since 2015, Japan equivalence since 2018 and Taiwan equivalence since 2021, plus handling certification in the United States since 1997. The CCOF directory listing for Driscoll’s, Inc. records each of these and the year it began.

Handling certification is the one shoppers rarely think about. Growing fruit organically is only half the chain, and a cooler, a packing line or a distribution centre that also handles conventional fruit has to be certified so the two streams do not mix after harvest. Loss of that certificate would break the organic claim even if every field stayed compliant.
The Criticisms: Hydroponics and Fumigated Seedlings
Two objections come up often enough to address directly: critics say hydroponic growing should not count as organic, and some nursery seedlings used by organic strawberry growers may be fumigated with methyl bromide before planting. Neither objection is fully settled by the sources available as of September 2026.
The Hydroponic Dispute
Critics of hydroponic organic certification argue that fruit grown without soil should not qualify as organic, since soil building is central to what organic farming was meant to be. Truthout makes that case and names Driscoll’s in it, describing the company as one of the largest hydroponic growers and saying it has lobbied to keep hydroponic cultivation eligible for organic certification, with a New York Times report cited as the basis.
Driscoll’s rejects the description. Company material states that it does not engage in any hydroponic growing whatsoever, which is about as flat a denial as a company can issue. Weighing the two, the direct statement from the business about its own operations is the more authoritative source, and Truthout’s claim rests on a secondhand reference rather than on documentation it publishes. That said, the contradiction is not resolved by anything available here, so the fair summary is that an advocacy outlet has made the allegation and the company has denied it on the record.
Methyl Bromide on Nursery Seedlings
Strawberry plants start life in a nursery, not in the field where the fruit is picked, and that gap is where the second objection lives. NonToxU reports that even organic strawberry growers commonly buy seedlings from commercial nurseries that may fumigate with methyl bromide before planting. Driscoll’s denies using seedlings produced that way.
Chemistry limits how far the concern goes. Organic advocates quoted in the same piece note that methyl bromide degrades in sunlight within about 10 days, so residues would be gone long before a plant sets fruit months later. The conclusion drawn there is not that organic strawberries are a fraud, but that they remain “far better than a conventional strawberry” even allowing for the nursery question. Anyone weighing a health angle on pesticide residue should treat that as general background and take specific dietary concerns to their doctor.
What the Sources Do Not Tell You
No public source gives the split between organic and conventional volume inside Driscoll’s own production, one of three real gaps other pages tend to paper over. Everything available says organic is the smaller share without putting a number on it, so any specific percentage you see quoted for that split is worth checking hard.
Second, independent pesticide residue testing of the company’s organic berries does not appear in any source consulted here. Certification records what a farm is allowed to use and what inspectors verified, which is not the same thing as a laboratory result on the fruit you bought.
Third, retail pricing moves too fast and varies too much by region to state a figure, and neither the company nor its certifier publishes one. Organic berries generally cost more than conventional berries because organic yields are lower and the inputs cost more, but a specific price for a specific store as of September 2026 is not something these sources support.

Buying organic from this brand is simple once the framing is right. Driscoll’s is not an organic company, it is a berry company with a large and genuinely certified organic program inside it, and the USDA Organic seal on the pack is the only thing that tells you which side of the line your fruit came from. Check the seal, treat unlabelled and repacked fruit as conventional, and remember that sustainability wording on conventional packs describes better conventional farming rather than organic farming.
