Yes, there is non-GMO corn, and most sweet corn sold in the United States is still non-GMO. Data from GMO Answers puts total sweet corn acreage with GMO traits at about 10 percent, a figure that covers frozen, canned and processed corn along with fresh. Fresh market sweet corn alone tells a different story, since GMO plantings there climb to just under 25 percent, a sign that seed companies have aimed their newer traits at the fresh produce market. Sweet corn overall covers fewer than 500,000 acres of American farmland, a small footprint next to field corn’s more than 86 million acres.

Field corn’s footprint dwarfs sweet corn’s using the acreage figures above: more than 170 acres of field corn for every acre of sweet corn nationwide. That scale gap is a large part of why GMO field corn dominates headlines about biotech crops while GMO sweet corn stays a comparatively minor part of the conversation, even though shoppers encounter sweet corn directly and field corn mostly through animal feed and fuel.
Survey based estimates paint a different picture. A count of 55 vendors across 14 states by the Institute for Responsible Technology found 56 percent selling GMO sweet corn against 44 percent selling conventional non-GMO corn. That gap likely comes down to where the survey was conducted, since GMO varieties concentrate in certain regional markets, while the acreage figures from GMO Answers and the Non-GMO Project average results across the whole country and carry more weight for a national answer.
What Makes GMO Sweet Corn Different?
GMO sweet corn carries added traits for weed and insect resistance that conventional sweet corn does not have. Seed developers inserted genes that let the plant survive herbicide spraying and produce its own insect-killing proteins.
Monsanto, now part of Bayer, introduced the first GMO sweet corn in 2011. Two companies dominate the GMO sweet corn seed market today. Bayer sells varieties under its Performance Series name through the Seminis brand, combining three separate Bt toxins with tolerance to glyphosate herbicide. Syngenta markets a competing line called Attribute II, pairing insect resistance with tolerance to both glufosinate and glyphosate. Any color of sweet corn, yellow, white or bicolor, can carry these traits, so kernel color is not a reliable clue.
What Is Bt Corn?
Bt corn is corn engineered with genes from the soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis so the plant produces its own insecticide. The proteins it makes are toxic to specific insect pests that feed on corn but are not toxic to humans, pets, livestock or other animals, according to the Food and Drug Administration. Growers plant Bt corn to cut down on chemical insecticide spraying, since the plant handles pest control on its own.
Which Brands Sell GMO Sweet Corn?
Bayer and Syngenta are the two seed companies behind nearly all GMO sweet corn on the market. Field testing suggests the traits show up less often at the retail level than the number of available varieties might suggest. A multi-year survey conducted by the Canadian Biotechnology Action Network and Vigilance OGM between 2014 and 2020 found relatively little GMO sweet corn actually being grown in Canada, with similar patterns reported in the United States. No agency publishes a comprehensive national count of GMO sweet corn acreage, so shoppers are left relying on labels rather than growing-region statistics.
How Is GMO Sweet Corn Labeled?
Food companies must disclose GMO sweet corn as bioengineered under a federal rule that took effect in 2022. The USDA’s National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard became mandatory for regulated food businesses with more than $2.5 million in annual sales as of January 1, 2022.
The disclosure appears as the word bioengineered on the package, sometimes next to a small on-pack symbol, though highly refined products without detectable modified genetic material are exempt from the requirement. That exemption matters less for fresh sweet corn, which is sold whole or on the cob rather than refined, so any bioengineered trait should show up on the label or at the point of sale.
Even so, the rule is not settled for good. A federal judge ruled between 2024 and 2025 that the USDA must rewrite parts of the bioengineered disclosure standard by 2028, after finding some exemptions for highly refined ingredients too broad, according to Rutgers Cooperative Extension. As of September 2026, that rewrite has not taken effect, and the current disclosure rules still apply to fresh sweet corn sold in stores.
Where Can You Buy Non-GMO Corn?
Non-GMO corn is sold at most major grocery chains, through seed companies for home gardeners, and from bulk agricultural suppliers for farms. Shoppers who want a guarantee beyond a plain label can look for store brands and third-party certifications built specifically around non-GMO sourcing.

Trader Joe’s applies the same non-GMO standard to its entire store brand lineup. Packaged national brands carry the option too: Del Monte sells a Golden Sweet Whole Kernel Corn labeled non-GMO and stocked at retailers including Walmart. Amazon and Walmart both carry organic non-GMO corn products through their online grocery sections as well.

Home gardeners who want to grow their own non-GMO corn have several seed companies to choose from. Johnny’s Selected Seeds sells open-pollinated and heirloom corn varieties bred without genetic modification. High Mowing Organic Seeds offers certified organic, non-GMO corn seed suited to both home gardens and small commercial growers. True Leaf Market stocks heirloom and hybrid non-GMO varieties, and the Living Seed Company specializes in open-pollinated heirloom corn.
Bulk and Agricultural Suppliers
Farms and larger buyers can source non-GMO corn in bulk from specialty suppliers. Albert Lea Seed sells non-GMO and certified organic corn seed by the bag or in farm-scale quantities. Clarkson Grain Company supplies non-GMO corn in several colors, including yellow, white, indigo blue and red, along with waxy dent corn. Hybrid85 ships non-GMO seed corn directly to buyers, with pricing starting around $85 per bag as of the company’s published rate.
How Do You Spot Non-GMO Corn at the Store or Market?
Look for a Non-GMO Project Verified seal or a USDA Organic seal on the package, since organic certification already requires non-GMO sourcing. Fresh corn sold loose needs a different approach, since neither seal has anywhere to appear.
Check the small print near a fresh corn display for a bioengineered disclosure, which retailers must post if the corn was grown from a GMO variety. At a farmers market, the most reliable method is also the simplest: ask the vendor directly whether the sweet corn on the table is a GMO variety. The Institute for Responsible Technology recommends this approach precisely because packaging rules do not reach farm stands the way they reach supermarket shelves. Whole Foods Market goes a step further and requires that any non-GMO claim on its shelves be backed by third-party verification through the Non-GMO Project or USDA Organic standards, rather than a supplier’s word alone.
A Worked Example: Reading a Frozen Corn Label
Picture a 15.25-ounce bag of frozen organic whole kernel corn from the 365 by Whole Foods Market brand. The package carries two marks: a USDA Certified Organic seal and a Non-GMO Project Verified butterfly. Either mark alone would rule out a GMO variety, since organic certification already bars genetically modified corn, but having both gives a shopper two independent confirmations instead of one. Now compare that bag to a plain bag of frozen corn with no seal at all. Absence of a Non-GMO Project mark does not automatically mean the corn is bioengineered, since many conventional growers never pay for voluntary third-party verification, but it does mean the shopper is relying on the federal bioengineered disclosure requirement instead of a seal that is easy to spot at a glance.
If I wanted to avoid GMO sweet corn, I would trust a Non-GMO Project Verified or USDA Organic label more than the corn’s color, a vendor’s general description, or the fact that it is sold fresh. Yellow, white and bicolor ears can all potentially be GMO, so appearance cannot settle the question. A bioengineered disclosure is also useful for fresh corn, but a certification gives me the clearer choice when I am specifically shopping for non-GMO corn.

A quick look at the package, or a quick question at the farm stand, settles the question in most cases.
