Most people do not want Java on their computer. You need it only when a specific program asks for it, and on a typical home machine nothing does. Minecraft Java Edition runs on Java, which is where the edition got its name. The surprise for most players is that the official Minecraft launcher bundles the correct runtime automatically, so single player and casual multiplayer need no separate install at all. Manual installation becomes necessary when you host your own Minecraft server, because the launcher only handles the runtime for the game it launches. Server operators have to match the Java version to the game version themselves, and the table further down this page shows which pairs with which.

Developers and People Who Use Java IDEs

Anyone writing software in Java needs it, and so does anyone running the tools built around it. IntelliJ IDEA, Eclipse, NetBeans and Android Studio all require Java to run, even when the code you write in them is Kotlin or something else entirely. That requirement is not optional and not something the IDE can work around, because the editor itself is a Java application.

Testing, Database and Business Software

Apache JMeter, Postman, SoapUI and the local web servers used in enterprise testing are Java applications. If a site you are legally required to use still demands an applet, treat it as a special case, not as a reason to keep Java running everywhere.

What Does Not Need Java at All

Nearly everything an ordinary computer does falls outside Java’s territory. None of the following depends on it:

  • General web browsing, which runs on JavaScript, HTML5 and related browser technologies
  • Email, whether in a browser or in a desktop client
  • Office work in Microsoft Office, Google Docs and similar productivity software
  • Video streaming on Netflix, YouTube and other services
  • Modern desktop gaming, with Minecraft Java Edition as the exception
  • Development in Python, Node.js, Go, Rust or .NET

Put those together and you have the entire working day of most households and many offices. Nothing breaks, nothing degrades, and no feature quietly disappears because Java is absent.

When the JRE Is Enough

Adding the development kit on top gains you nothing except a larger install and more to patch.

When You Need the Full JDK

Developers setting up a working environment install the JDK. So do people building a project from source, even if they never intend to write a line of it themselves.

How to Tell if You Need Java on Your Computer

Telling whether you need Java means working through four checks in order: wait for an install prompt, read any error that names a Java runtime or JVM, compare your actual programs against the categories above, and do nothing if none of those apply. The answer usually appears at step one or two.

  1. Wait for a prompt. Software that requires Java generally offers to install it at the moment it is needed, so the requirement announces itself rather than hiding.
  2. Read the error text. A program that fails to launch while mentioning a Java runtime or a JVM has told you exactly what is missing.
  3. Check your actual application list. Compare what you use against the categories above. Minecraft Java Edition, a Java IDE, JMeter, DBeaver or an internal work tool put you in the yes column.
  4. Do nothing and watch. If no application on your machine fails for want of a Java runtime, no installation is required and none should be made in advance.

Checking What Is Already Installed on Windows

Java may already be present from an old install you have forgotten. Read that table as a floor, not a suggestion. Version 26.1, current as of May 2026, expects Java 25, while a server still running 1.16.5 for an old modpack wants Java 8 or 11 instead.

A Worked Example for a Server Operator

Picture someone hosting two worlds for friends. One runs Minecraft 1.21 for current play, and the other stays on 1.16.5 because a favorite modpack never moved forward. Following the table, the first server needs Java 21 and the second needs Java 8 or 11, so this operator installs two Java versions and points each server at the right one. Running several Java versions side by side on one machine is supported, which is what makes the arrangement practical. How to Remove Java You Do Not Need

One caution before you start. Check that the entry you are removing is not a runtime some other application depends on, because business software and database clients occasionally install their own copies. Anything listed under a vendor’s name rather than plain Java is worth leaving alone until you know what put it there.

If a Java Program Still Will Not Start

Installing Java does not always end the trouble, and the usual causes are small.

  • Wrong version for the job. Minecraft 1.17 wants Java 16 and 1.21 wants Java 21, so a single modern install does not cover every case. Match the version to the table above before assuming something is broken.
  • Runtime present but not the right kind. An application that needs to compile code fails on a JRE alone and needs the JDK instead.
  • More than one Java on the machine. Multiple versions can coexist, but an application may find the wrong one first. Check what java -version reports and compare it against what the program expects.
  • An old copy in an unusual folder. Installations outside standard locations often go unnoticed, so a version you never see may be the one answering.
  • The program never needed Java. Errors get misread. Unless the message names a Java runtime or a JVM, the missing piece is probably something else.
