Not every bay is full size. Compact parallel spaces run 7 to 8 feet wide and 19 to 20 feet long, which is why a full-size pickup hangs over the line in some city lots and garages. Reliant Parking lists those compact figures separately for exactly that reason, since a lot striped entirely to compact dimensions will not hold the average American vehicle.
Width is the number most people underestimate. An 8-foot bay sounds roomy until you set a 6-foot-wide sedan inside it and find 2 feet of total slack, split between the curb side and the traffic side. Georgia’s official Department of Driver Services page gives 22 feet in length by 10 feet in depth, while some secondary write-ups repeat 21 feet by 10 feet. Trust the state page, because the agency that sets the box is the agency that defines it.
Texas is the harder case. Driving school write-ups report either 21 feet by 8 feet or 25 feet by 6 feet, figures far enough apart that they cannot be rounding differences, and no official Texas Department of Public Safety specification could be retrieved to settle the question. Until DPS publishes a number, treat any single Texas figure as one school’s experience of one test site rather than a statewide rule.
One more distinction is worth holding onto. Test dimensions and parking design standards answer different questions, so a 24-foot exam box and a 22-foot design minimum are not in conflict; the first is a controlled exercise and the second is a striping rule. Quoting a test figure as though it described street parking is the most common error in the guides that rank for this question.

Four cones and a tape measure reproduce a test box well enough to practice on any empty lot. Work through the steps below, then shrink the gap a foot at a time once you can place the car cleanly.

Apply the rule to a bigger vehicle and the picture changes fast.
