Ithaca Peak and Turquoise Mountain

Two areas produce the material sold under the Kingman name: Ithaca Peak and Aztec Peak, the second of which the trade calls Turquoise Mountain. Commercial work in the district started somewhere between the late 1880s and the early 1900s. Chuck Colbaugh took over the turquoise mining contract for Ithaca Peak and Turquoise Mountain in the early 1960s, and his family has held the operation ever since. Marty Colbaugh and his son Josh represent the third and fourth generations still involved as of 2026.

The 1970s Boom

Under Leonard Hardy, the mine hit a scale no American turquoise operation has matched since. Reports put the 1973 output above 80,000 pounds, and during that decade Kingman supplied close to half the turquoise sold worldwide. Volume on that order is the reason so much vintage Southwestern silverwork holds Kingman stone, often without the paperwork to prove it. Kingman turquoise sits at roughly 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale, which puts it below quartz and well below the stones people think of as everyday hard wear. Softer material is also more porous, and porous turquoise takes up oils, lotions and dye from whatever touches it. Staining is the usual outcome, it is not reversible, and that single fact explains most of why stabilization became standard practice.

The Grading Ladder

Durango Silver publishes a grading scheme that covers turquoise generally rather than Kingman alone, and it is the vocabulary most American dealers use. Ratings run from AAAA down through the letter grades, and hardness tracks the rating closely, since a harder stone takes a better polish and survives being set.

Numbers matter more than the letter codes here. Roughly 60 percent or more of what a turquoise mine pulls is low grade, so the majority of Kingman rough was never going to reach a jeweler untreated, and scarcity at the top of the ladder is structural rather than a sales line.

A Worked Example from the 1973 Output

Take the peak year as arithmetic rather than as a headline. If the mine moved 80,000 pounds in 1973 and the published grade split holds, roughly 48,000 pounds of that run was low grade material bound for stabilization, and 16,000 to 24,000 pounds fell into the standard natural band. What is left, somewhere between 8,000 and 16,000 pounds on paper, is the ceiling for high grade rough, and because the sources describe high grade as a very small share of any mine’s yield, the true figure sits at the bottom of that range or below it. That calculation is derived from the percentages Durango Silver publishes, not a tonnage the mine has reported.

Why Most Kingman Turquoise Is Stabilized

The reason most Kingman turquoise is stabilized comes down to what the mine actually produces: soft, porous, low grade rough that would stain and crumble if left untreated.

What Stabilization Does

Stabilization pushes epoxy into the pores of a soft stone under pressure. Color deepens, the material stops crumbling under a saw, and a cabochon that would have been unusable becomes something a silversmith can set. Colbaugh Processing built much of its business on exactly this, treating medium and low grade rough from Kingman and from other mines in the United States and abroad.

Leonard W. Hardy worked out the process for Kingman material during the 1950s and 1960s, and the first documented treated Kingman dates to 1961. Since then, most of what has sold commercially has been treated in some way. Some lower grade stones get more than epoxy, because a pale matrix is sometimes darkened artificially so the pattern reads with more contrast, which is common practice but should be disclosed on the receipt.

Where the Sources Disagree

One retailer, Coral Strands, describes Kingman turquoise as not typically treated or enhanced with dyes or other artificial means. Weighed against T.Skies, Pueblo Direct and Durango Silver, all three of which document stabilization as routine since the early 1960s, that claim does not hold up as a general statement about the mine’s output. The most charitable reading is that it describes natural, untreated Kingman specifically, which does exist and is prized. Treat an untreated claim as something to verify in writing rather than something to assume.

I would not rule out a Kingman piece simply because it is stabilized. With most commercial Kingman having been treated for decades, stabilization seems like a practical response to a porous stone rather than a reason to dismiss it. My line would be clear disclosure and a price that reflects the treatment. I would pay extra for fully natural material only when its hardness, color and matrix make that difference visible and durable, not just because the word natural sounds more desirable.

How to Tell Real Kingman Turquoise from Look-Alikes

What to Ask the Seller

The surest way to tell real Kingman turquoise from a look-alike is to get a written guarantee from the seller naming the mine, stating the treatment status and identifying the seller. Appearance alone will not settle it, since material from Mexico and China can look very close to Kingman once a stone is cut and set into silver. Reputable dealers hand this over without argument, and a refusal to put it in writing is itself an answer.

  1. Mine of origin: the words Kingman, Mineral Park or Mohave County in writing, not a vague label like Arizona turquoise.
  2. Treatment status: natural, stabilized, or stabilized with the matrix darkened, stated plainly rather than left blank.
  3. Seller identity: full business name and address on the paperwork, so the guarantee is attached to someone reachable.
  4. Return window: a stated period during which the piece can go back if an independent opinion contradicts the guarantee.

If the Stone Still Does Not Add Up

Suppose the paperwork is thin and the seller has gone quiet. Start with what the stone itself can tell you rather than with the asking price. A white matrix is not proof of Kingman and a black web does not rule it out, so pattern alone settles nothing, and the more useful move is comparing the piece against documented Kingman material in an established dealer’s reference photographs.

Failing that, the honest position is uncertainty. An older unattributed cabochon from a Southwestern estate piece is statistically likely to be Kingman, given how much stone the mine put into circulation during the 1970s, but likelihood is not provenance. Pay the price of unattributed turquoise instead of the premium for a named mine, and treat any later confirmation as a bonus.
