How Much Gold Is in a Laptop Computer or Motherboard?
A modern laptop computer does not hold much gold: roughly 0.1 to 0.3 grams, worth about $15 to $45 of raw metal at the $150 per gram price reported in April 2026. Machines built before 2010 run higher, closer to 0.2 to 0.5 grams. Almost all of it is plating a few microns thick on connector pins and edge contacts, plus hair-fine bonding wires sealed inside the chips. Recovering that metal from one or two devices is a losing trade, since acids, protective gear and disposal fees cost more than the gold is worth. How Much Gold Is in a Laptop Computer

Gold Testing Equipment is more conservative and puts a laptop at under 0.2 grams. Interesting Engineering rounds further still, to about one tenth of a gram per laptop. All three sit inside the same band, so 0.1 to 0.3 grams works as a planning range, and the low end is the safer assumption for anything bought new in the 2020s. None of the three publish a per-model breakdown, and no manufacturer publishes gold content by product line, so any figure quoted for a specific serial number is a guess.
Modern Laptops Against Older Machines
Older hardware carries more gold, and the gap shows up in every source. Manufacturers have thinned the plating on contacts steadily as the metal got more expensive and plating methods improved, so vintage boards carry noticeably heavier deposits than current ones, according to Gold Testing Equipment. Nobody in the material consulted here puts a percentage on that decline, which is worth remembering when an online calculator offers one.
Processor packaging matters as much as board age. Ceramic processors from the 1990s and early 2000s used gold pins, gold bonding wire and plating under the lid, and Gold Testing Equipment calls them among the richest sources of gold in computer scrap. Plastic-packaged modern chips still contain the metal, just less of it. That is why a drawer of old socketed processors can be worth more attention than a stack of recent laptop boards.
What 0.2 Grams Actually Looks Like
One gram of gold is roughly the size of a small paperclip, the comparison Gold Testing Equipment uses. A fifth of that is what sits inside a typical desktop, and it is spread across dozens of separate plated surfaces rather than pooled anywhere you could pick it up.
Nothing in a laptop is a solid gold part. Plating on a connector is measured in microns, thinner than kitchen foil, and the bonding wires inside a chip are finer than a human hair. Geometry is the whole reason recovery is hard, because the metal is real but scattered and chemically bound to everything around it.
How Much Gold Is in a Motherboard
A single motherboard holds only a fraction of a gram, which is why boards get sold by weight in lots rather than valued one at a time. Gold Testing Equipment uses exactly that phrasing, and PC Build Advisor ranks a laptop motherboard’s edge connectors second only to the processor as the richest part of the machine.
Board size and age drive most of the variation. Full-size desktop boards carry more slots, more connectors and more plated surface than a compact laptop board, so they yield more per unit. Anything with a ceramic processor still in the socket is worth more than the bare board, and a board stripped of its memory, cards and processor is worth considerably less than one that arrives complete.
Gold Content and Scrap Value by Device Type
Here are the published figures side by side, converted at $150 per gram, the price reported in April 2026. Gold moves daily, so check a live quote before treating any dollar column as current.

One oddity in that set deserves a flag. Interesting Engineering also quotes roughly $12 of gold in a desktop and about $6 in a laptop, dollar amounts that cannot be reconciled with $150 per gram and a fifth of a gram of metal. Those figures almost certainly date from a much lower gold price than April 2026, so trust the gram weights, which the sources broadly agree on, and run your own conversion at the rate you can actually sell into.
Weights themselves disagree mildly rather than sharply. Gold Testing Equipment’s “less than 0.2 grams” for a laptop, PC Build Advisor’s 0.1 to 0.3 grams and Interesting Engineering’s one tenth of a gram all overlap, and the differences look like different machines and different measurement methods rather than a real dispute. Where a number has to be picked, PC Build Advisor gives the most granular breakdown and is the one worth leaning on.
Where the Gold Sits Inside a Computer
Gold clusters on anything that has to make and hold an electrical contact: processor pins, memory edge connectors, expansion slot fingers, external ports, and the bonding wires inside chips. Everything else on a board is copper, tin, fiberglass and solder.
Gold Fingers and Edge Connectors
Memory modules carry the most visible gold in any computer, the striped contacts along the bottom edge that the trade calls gold fingers. Gold Testing Equipment lists them first among board locations, and the same plating appears on graphics cards, network cards and sound cards where they meet the slot.
Laptop memory uses those same contacts on a shorter module. Soldered memory, which became common in thin machines, removes the connector entirely and takes its plating with it. One more reason a 2024 ultrabook yields less than a 2009 business notebook has nothing to do with plating thickness and everything to do with parts that no longer plug in.
Processors and Bonding Wires
The processor is the richest single part of a laptop, PC Build Advisor says, and PCC Group puts one processor at 0.2 to 0.5 grams. Gold turns up there in three forms: plated pins or contact pads, bonding wire linking the silicon die to the package, and plating under the metal lid on older ceramic parts.
Integrated circuits beyond the processor hold gold as well. JHI E-Scrap points to the fine wires connecting a die to its pins as a gold-bearing feature of chips in general, which is part of why a fully populated board is worth more to a refiner than a stripped one. Chipsets, controllers and memory packages all contribute a little.
Ports, Jacks and Board Plating
External connectors get plated for exactly the same reason internal contacts do. JHI E-Scrap lists USB, HDMI, Ethernet and audio jacks among the gold-bearing parts of a consumer device, and a thin layer of gold also goes onto exposed pads and some traces on the board surface itself.

Why Manufacturers Use Gold at All
Gold does not corrode, and a contact that oxidizes is a contact that eventually fails. That one property justifies the expense on every pin, pad and wire where a bad connection would be costly or impossible to repair.
Copper and silver both conduct electricity better than gold. Both also tarnish, and Gold Testing Equipment explains that the plating exists to stop oxidation from degrading signal quality rather than to improve conductivity. Because the job is protective rather than electrical, the layer can be extremely thin, and engineers specify the least that will survive the product’s service life. That amount has been shrinking for decades, which is the direct cause of the falling scrap yields further up this page.
What a Laptop’s Gold Is Actually Worth
$15 to $45 of raw metal sits in a typical modern laptop, and that is the theoretical ceiling before a single recovery loss. Nobody pays that for a dead machine, because nobody gets all of it back out.
Refiners pay on recovered weight after processing and after their fees, so the realistic return on one machine is a fraction of the raw figure. PC Build Advisor puts it bluntly: for one or two laptops, the cost of chemicals, safety equipment and waste disposal almost certainly exceeds the value of the gold recovered. Scrap value also competes with resale value, and resale usually wins by a wide margin on anything that still powers on.
Scale changes the arithmetic completely. Interesting Engineering notes that a tonne of electronic waste can hold 40 to 800 times more gold than a tonne of gold ore, which is why specialist recyclers invest in furnaces and leaching lines. PCC Group frames the same threshold from the individual’s side, saying it takes more than a ton of discarded devices before extraction is worth doing. Sitting between those two facts is the reason a private seller cannot make the numbers work.
Can You Extract the Gold Yourself
Technically yes, practically no. Every source consulted here reaches the same conclusion: home extraction is not cost-effective for individuals, and the chemistry involved is genuinely hazardous.
A Worked Example with Real Numbers
Take a 2009 business laptop at the top of its published range, 0.5 grams. At $150 per gram that is $75 of gold in the machine, the best case before anything goes wrong.
- Raw gold value: 0.5 grams at $150 per gram equals $75.
- Recovery loss: no source consulted publishes a home recovery rate, so assume a meaningful share of the metal is lost to incomplete dissolution, spills and filtering. Your realistic yield is below $75 and you cannot know by how much in advance.
- Consumables and gear: acids, glassware, fume control and protective equipment all get bought before any gold appears, and PC Build Advisor says that outlay alone usually exceeds the value recovered at one or two units.
- Waste disposal: spent acid loaded with dissolved metals is hazardous waste, not drain water, and getting rid of it legally costs money rather than earning it.
- Time: stripping, dissolving, precipitating and refining run to hours per machine, and that labour is unpaid.
Run the same sums across 100 identical laptops and the picture shifts, which is precisely why refineries exist and hobbyists rarely profit. PC Build Advisor describes home recovery as an interesting chemistry project at scale, with hundreds of units and proper equipment, and not much of a proposition below that.
Why Home Chemistry Is the Wrong Tool
Dissolving gold off electronics calls for strong acids, and PCC Group describes the procedure as dangerous and unsuitable for home attempts. Fumes from those reactions attack lungs and eyes, and the residue is toxic to pour anywhere. Anyone with a health condition affecting the lungs should not be near it at all, and that is a question for a doctor rather than a scrapping forum.
Volume is the other half of the problem. PCC Group notes that more than a ton of discarded devices is needed before extraction becomes worthwhile, a quantity no household accumulates. Industrial recyclers clear that bar in a single shipment, which is why the work belongs with them.
Better Ways to Get Value from an Old Laptop
Sell it working, recycle it through a certified operator, or pool it into a bulk lot. Each of those three routes beats home extraction for anyone holding fewer than a few dozen machines.
Sell the Whole Machine First
A working laptop is worth far more intact than as scrap, which PC Build Advisor states plainly. Even a slow, elderly notebook with a sound screen and a usable battery tends to fetch more on the second-hand market than the total gold content of a pre-2010 business unit at the top of its range. Wiping the drive and listing it takes an evening.
Use a Certified E-Waste Recycler
Certified recyclers typically pay $1 to $5 per device, PC Build Advisor reports, and they handle the hazardous fractions under permit. Payment is not really the point at that level. Getting a dead machine out of a landfill stream, and out of the closet, is the actual return.
Bulk Lots and Precious Metal Refiners
Component sales only make sense in volume. PC Build Advisor suggests selling parts in bulk once you have dozens of units, and Interesting Engineering describes shipping material to professional reclamation companies that process it and split the proceeds with the supplier.
JHI E-Scrap, which buys scrap for refining, advises contacting a qualified refiner for an evaluation rather than guessing at a figure. Refiners assay a lot, quote against recovered weight and deduct a processing charge, so ask for the terms in writing before anything ships. Freight on a heavy pallet of boards can quietly eat the margin on a small lot.
If I had an old laptop, I would judge it first as a working machine, not as a gold container. Even the upper end of the raw gold range is modest, and that value is spread through parts that are difficult and unsafe to separate. A complete older laptop may still have useful components, while a stripped board loses the processor, memory and cards that add the most potential value. If reuse is not realistic, I would send it intact to a proper recycler rather than chase a small amount of metal.
What to Check When Your Gold Estimate Looks Too High
Almost every inflated estimate traces back to one of five mistakes. Work through them before acting on a number found online.
- Stale gold price: dollar figures published years ago were converted at the rate of the day. The $150 per gram used through this article is an April 2026 reference point and needs rechecking against a live quote.
- Grams read as ounces: a troy ounce is about 31 grams. An estimate quoting ounces per laptop is off by roughly two orders of magnitude.
- Per-tonne data applied to one device: the striking comparison that e-waste can carry 40 to 800 times the gold of ore is measured per tonne, not per laptop. Applying it to a single machine produces nonsense.
- Vintage figures on modern hardware: ceramic-era processor yields do not transfer to a plastic-packaged chip, and plating has thinned across the board since.
- Raw content read as payout: content is what is in the device. Payout is what survives recovery, fees and freight, and it is always smaller.
If a claim still looks too good after that pass, weigh it against the plainest sanity check the sources offer: a whole desktop holds about as much gold as a fifth of a small paperclip. Any estimate implying more metal than that needs a source you can read for yourself.
