How Many Square Feet Is a Parking Space? Standard Stall Sizes
A standard parking space in the United States is 9 feet wide by 18 feet long, which works out to 162 square feet. How many square feet you actually need depends on the stall type: compact bays run 8 by 16 feet (128 square feet), a parallel space is usually 8 by 22 feet (176 square feet), and an ADA accessible stall is at least 8 feet wide plus a 5 foot access aisle beside it. No federal rule fixes the size of an ordinary stall, so the binding number for any given lot comes from the local zoning code rather than from a national standard.
Standard Parking Space Dimensions in Square Feet
The 9 by 18 foot rectangle is the figure most American lot designers start from, and multiplying the two sides gives 162 square feet of striped surface per car. That measurement covers the stall and nothing else. Drive aisles, landscape islands, curb ramps and entrance throats all sit outside it, which is why a lot with 50 marked bays always occupies far more ground than 50 times 162 square feet.
Plenty of sites go larger. A stall of 9 or 10 feet by 20 feet gives 180 to 200 square feet, and developers pick those numbers when the property expects pickup trucks, trailers or family vehicles with sliding doors. Width matters more than length for everyday comfort, because width decides whether a door can swing open without catching the car alongside.
Why 9 by 18 Feet Became the Baseline
Recommendations from the Institute of Transportation Engineers, usually shortened to ITE, are what most North American jurisdictions lean on, and the 9 by 18 foot stall is the dimension those recommendations treat as normal for perpendicular parking. Municipal code writers rarely start from scratch. They copy a figure that traffic engineers already accept, which is how one number spread across thousands of separate ordinances without any federal agency ever mandating it.
ITE also publishes the Parking Generation Manual, the industry reference used to work out how many spaces a given development needs in the first place. Dimension standards and count standards come from the same body, so a site plan that follows one usually follows the other.
When Lots Use 9.5 or 10 Foot Widths
Retail centers, medical offices and any site with heavy turnover often widen stalls to 9.5 feet. Wider bays cut down on door dings and let drivers park in one movement instead of three, which keeps the aisle clear during busy hours. An extra half foot across 200 stalls costs real land, so the trade is deliberate: fewer spaces, fewer complaints.
At 8.5 feet a stall still handles most sedans and crossovers comfortably. Full size trucks and large SUVs are a different matter, and that gap has been widening as American buyers keep shifting toward bigger vehicles, a trend the US Environmental Protection Agency documented in its 2025 report on the light duty fleet.

Parking space sizes span from 128 square feet for a compact stall up to 324 square feet for a tandem pair, with every common type’s width, length and total square footage listed below. Figures reflect the dimensions cited by parking and paving industry references as of September 2026, and each one is a typical value rather than a legal minimum for any particular town.

Access aisle width is the variable most people forget. Car accessible stalls need 5 feet of aisle, van accessible stalls need either 5 or 8 feet depending on which layout the designer picks, and every aisle has to stay level within a 1:48 slope in all directions.
How Big Is a Compact Parking Space
Compact stalls measure 8 feet by 16 feet, giving 128 square feet, which is 34 square feet less than a standard bay. That reduction sounds small until it repeats across a whole deck. Swapping a run of standard stalls for compact ones raises the space count by roughly 15 to 20 percent on the same footprint, which is the entire reason compact striping exists.
Parallel compact spaces work differently. Those are narrower but longer, typically 7 to 8 feet wide and 19 to 20 feet long, landing between 133 and 160 square feet depending on where the stripe falls. Length is what a parallel bay needs most, since a driver has to steer in sideways rather than straight ahead.
How Many Compact Stalls a Developer Can Use
A quarter of the inventory is the share developers commonly set aside for compact dimensions, although the ceiling is written into local code and varies widely from one town to the next. Signs and pavement legends have to mark those bays clearly. Without that marking, a driver who wedges a full size pickup into a 128 square foot stall ends up blocking the car beside it and the aisle behind.
Parallel and Angled Parking Space Sizes
Standard parallel parking stalls measure 8 feet wide by 22 feet long, or 176 square feet, longer and narrower than a perpendicular bay so a driver can pull in and out without a three point turn. New York City goes further and requires 8.5 by 23 feet for parallel bays, longer than the 22 foot figure most industry guides cite.
Aisle Widths by Parking Angle
Angle changes everything about how much drive aisle a row needs. Bays cut at 45 degrees need 12 to 14 feet of aisle, 60 degree bays need 14 to 16 feet, and 75 degree bays need 18 to 20 feet. Perpendicular rows, the 90 degree case, demand the most: 24 feet minimum for two way traffic, or 12 to 15 feet where the aisle runs one way only.
Shallower angles therefore buy narrower aisles but waste more surface per stall, since the rectangle sits diagonally inside the row and leaves triangular scraps at each end. Designers trade one effect against the other on every site plan. A cramped infill lot usually ends up angled, while a big box store with land to spare stripes everything at 90 degrees.
ADA Accessible Parking Space Requirements
A car accessible space must be at least 96 inches (8 feet) wide, sitting beside an access aisle at least 60 inches (5 feet) wide that runs the stall’s full length, the one parking dimension the Americans with Disabilities Act controls directly rather than leaving to local codes. Those minimums do not bend for local preference.
Counted as a rectangle, an 8 by 18 foot accessible bay is 144 square feet. Parking guides commonly quote another 40 to 50 square feet per space for the aisle, a figure well below the 90 square feet a dedicated 5 by 18 foot aisle actually covers, so treat the larger number as the safe planning figure and the smaller one as an average across stalls that share an aisle. Either way, a single accessible space with its own aisle needs roughly 234 square feet, not 162.
Van Accessible Spaces and the Two Width Options
Vans with side ramps need more room, and the ADA gives two ways to provide it. Option one makes the stall 132 inches, or 11 feet, wide and keeps the access aisle at 60 inches. The alternative holds the stall at 96 inches and widens the aisle to 96 inches instead. Both layouts add up to 16 feet of combined width, so the choice comes down to how the striping fits the existing pavement.
Garages raise a second issue. Vertical clearance has to be at least 98 inches along the vehicle route to a van accessible space, at the space itself, and along the route back out. Decks built with lower beams cannot host van accessible parking on that level, which pushes those stalls to the ground floor or to a surface lot nearby.
Access Aisle Slope, Marking and Signs
Surface quality is regulated too. An access aisle has to be firm, stable and slip resistant, and it cannot slope more than 1:48 in any direction, which comes to a quarter inch of fall per foot. That flatness is what lets a wheelchair user transfer out of a vehicle without the chair rolling away.
Hatched striping marks the aisle so that nobody parks in it. Each accessible space carries a sign showing the International Symbol of Accessibility, and van stalls add a van accessible label underneath. Signs have to sit at least 60 inches off the ground measured to the bottom edge, high enough that a parked vehicle does not hide them from a driver looking for a spot.
How Many Accessible Spaces a Lot Needs
Lots with 25 or more spaces must set aside at least 2 percent of the total as accessible. On a 200 space lot that means four accessible stalls at minimum. Every one of them has to connect to the shortest accessible route reaching the building entrance, which in practice pins them to the bays closest to the door rather than to whatever corner is easiest to stripe.
Tandem, EV and Other Special Use Stalls
Tandem parking stacks two cars end to end in a 9 by 36 foot strip, 324 square feet for the pair, or 162 square feet each. Apartment buildings and townhouse driveways use the layout because it fits two permits into one bay width. The obvious cost is access, since whoever parks in front has to move the car before the vehicle behind can leave.
Electric vehicle charging bays are sized like ordinary stalls. Parking references list them at standard or standard large dimensions, meaning 162 to 200 square feet, so adding a charger does not change the footprint on the striping plan. What does change is the equipment placement, and sites with room usually choose the 20 foot length to keep bollards and cable management clear of the parked vehicle.
How Much Land a 50 Space Lot Needs
A 50 space lot needs roughly 12,000 to 15,000 square feet of total land once drive aisles are counted, well above the 8,100 square feet of striped stall area that 50 standard 162 square foot stalls add up to alone. Aisles, in other words, consume a third to nearly half of the total surface.
Running the Math on a Single Row
Work through one double loaded row to see where the surface goes. Two rows of stalls face each other at 18 feet deep apiece with a 24 foot two way aisle between them, so the module measures 60 feet across. Slice that module into 9 foot widths and each slice holds two stalls, one per side, which works out to 270 square feet of gross lot area per car against the 162 square feet inside the stripes.
Fifty stalls at 270 square feet gives 13,500 square feet, sitting neatly inside the 12,000 to 15,000 square foot range that parking guides quote for a lot that size. Perimeter driveways, landscape islands, a dumpster enclosure and the accessible route to the door all push a real site past that number, so treat 13,500 square feet as a floor rather than a target. One useful shortcut falls out of the arithmetic: gross lot area per space runs about 1.7 times the stall area itself.
Why Local Codes Beat Any National Number
No federal statute tells a shopping center how wide to stripe an ordinary stall. Zoning ordinances do that, and they differ from one municipality to the next. Los Angeles uses 9 by 18 feet for perpendicular spaces, the familiar baseline, while New York City requires 8.5 by 23 feet for parallel bays, a stall a foot longer than the common figure.
Anyone sizing a lot for a specific address should treat 162 square feet as a starting estimate, then confirm it against the code that actually applies. The gap between an assumed 9 foot stall and a required 9.5 foot stall is enough to cost a project several spaces, which on a tight site can be the difference between approval and a redesign.
How to Check the Rule for Your Address
- Find the zoning district. Search the municipality name plus zoning map and look up the parcel, or call the planning counter with the street address in hand.
- Open the off street parking section. Municipal codes file stall dimensions under a heading such as Off Street Parking and Loading, usually inside the zoning chapter.
- Read the dimension table. Look for stall width, stall depth, aisle width by parking angle, and the maximum share of compact spaces the code allows.
- Check the accessible count separately. ADA scoping applies on top of the local table, never instead of it.
- Confirm with the planning department. Ask whether an overlay district, redevelopment plan or recent amendment changes the base numbers before any drawings go out.
If I were planning a lot, I would use 9 by 18 feet only as an early sketching number, not as permission to stripe the final spaces. The local rule deserves more trust because it is the number that actually governs an ordinary stall, while the familiar baseline can be too small, too large or paired with different aisle and compact-space limits in a particular town. I would also reserve room for accessible spaces and their aisles before trying to maximize the stall count.
If the Stall Size Still Does Not Work
Doors hitting the next car, trucks overhanging the aisle, and a lot falling short of the 2 percent accessible minimum are among the failure patterns that show up again and again, and each one has a standard fix listed below.
- Doors hit the neighboring car. Width is the culprit, not length. Restriping from 9 feet to 9.5 feet solves it at the cost of one space for every 19 in the row.
- Large trucks overhang the aisle. An 18 foot stall is short for a full size pickup. Adding 2 feet of depth, to the 20 foot standard large dimension, clears the overhang where the site has room.
- Compact stalls hold the wrong vehicles. A 128 square foot bay is built for small cars, and even an 8.5 foot width struggles with full size trucks and SUVs. Signs and pavement legends are the only enforcement most lots have.
- The access aisle keeps getting blocked. Hatch markings exist precisely to stop that. Faded hatching is a maintenance failure and a compliance problem at once, so repainting comes first.
- A van cannot clear the garage. Vertical clearance below 98 inches rules a level out for van accessible parking. Moving those stalls to a level or surface lot that clears 98 inches is the only compliant answer.
- The lot is short on accessible spaces. Any lot with 25 or more spaces needs at least 2 percent accessible, and each one has to sit on the shortest accessible route to the entrance.
